India vs New Zealand: Team India has suffered a major setback ahead of the T20I series against New Zealand with Tilak Varma ruled out of the first three matches.

What ails Tilak Varma?

Tilak was discharged from the hospital on Thursday morning and is in good health. He will return to Hyderabad on Friday. After his symptoms subside and his injury heals, he will gradually return to physical training and skill practice. However, he is ruled out of the first three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches against New Zealand. His availability for the last two T20I matches will depend on his progress in training and skill practice.

How will Tilak Varma’s absence affect Team India?

Tilak Varma's absence is a major blow to India's World Cup mission. The hero of the Asia Cup 2025 final and a dynamic middle-order batsman, Tilak Varma, has been injured at a time when less than a month remains before the World Cup.

Why was Tilak Varma hospitalized?

The 23-year-old left-handed batter was playing for Hyderabad against Saurashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Rajkot when he suddenly experienced severe pain. He was immediately taken to Gokul Hospital, where tests revealed testicular torsion. Doctors advised immediate surgery. Tilak's surgery was successful, and he is now recovering well.

Tilak has been a key part of India's T20 setup for the past year. He scored an unbeaten 69 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final, leading the team to victory.

What about Shreyas Iyer?

India's ODI vice-captain and middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been declared match-fit by the medical team at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru.

Shreyas scored 82 runs off 53 balls while playing for Mumbai against Himachal Pradesh in a Vijay Hazare Trophy league match in Jaipur. He had suffered a spleen injury while taking a catch during the Australia tour.

Indian squad for the series against New Zealand: Suryakumar Yadav (Captain), Axar Patel (Vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Sanju Samson (Wicketkeeper), Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Rinku Singh, Harshit Rana, and Ishan Kishan (Wicketkeeper).
